On January 12, 2004, 'Nightline' anchor Ted Koppel and his ABC News colleagues will retrace the route they took with the 3rd Infantry Division during the invasion of Iraq earlier this year in order to assess and report on the current situation on the ground. Koppel will depart from the Kuwait/Iraq border and drive across the desert through Nasiriyah and Karbala to the Euphrates River, then continue on to Baghdad, his final destination. This week-long series will begin with a one-hour special edition of 'Nightline' airing on MONDAY, JANUARY 12. Koppel will be reporting for 'Nightline' and the other ABC News broadcasts throughout that week. 'Nightline' correspondent John Donvan will also be on assignment in Iraq and plans to revisit many of the towns, villages and cities he chronicled as a unilateral reporter during Operation Iraqi Freedom. On Monday, December 8, Columbia University announced that ABC News and Ted Koppel had been awarded the prestigious Alfred I. duPont Award for 'Tip of the Spear,' a one-hour primetime ABC News special chronicling Koppel's reporting with the Army's Third Infantry Division, as the division has moved through Kuwait, across the border into Iraq and to Baghdad.
